UPSC CSE 2025: Step-by-Step Selection Process

UPSC Prelims 2025

The Prelims exam is the first stage and consists of two objective-type papers:

  1. General Studies Paper-I – Covers History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science & Tech, and Current Affairs.
  2. General Studies Paper-II (CSAT) – Tests comprehension, logical reasoning, and decision-making skills.

The exam is qualifying in nature, meaning the marks are not counted in the final merit list. Only candidates who clear the Prelims cut-off can appear for the Mains.

UPSC Mains 2025

The Mains stage includes nine descriptive papers:

  • Paper A & B – Compulsory Indian Language and English (Qualifying in nature)
  • Paper I – Essay
  • Papers II to V – General Studies (GS 1, GS 2, GS 3, GS 4)
  • Papers VI & VII – Optional Subject (Two Papers)
