Facts You Need to Know About Civil Service Main Exam

 

  • The Civil Service Mains Examination is the second phase of the Civil Service Examination.
  • The candidates who successfully qualify for the UPSC Prelims examination are eligible for the Civil Service Mains examination.
  • During the Civil Service Main Exam, the examiner tests the academic talent of the candidate deeply and assesses their ability to present their knowledge in accordance with the questions asked in a time-bound manner. 
  • The civil service mains syllabus consists of 9 papers. Among them, two are qualifying papers with 300 marks each.
  • Any Indian language paper and an English Language paper are the two qualifying papers.
  • The papers for the IAS main exam on Essays, General Studies and Optional Subjects of the candidates who secure 25% of the marks in both the qualifying language papers are eligible for evaluation. 
  • If the candidate fails to secure the minimum marks on these qualifying papers, then the marks obtained by them on other papers will be considered or evaluated.

Civil Service Syllabus for Language and Essay Papers

 

  • UPSC Essay Paper: Paper I Of UPSC Mains

 

In the UPSC Essay Paper, the candidates are required to write essays on multiple topics. Before starting the essay, the candidates are expected to understand the subject given for the essay. Then, they need to arrange ideas in a proper order. This will help the candidates to arrange their ideas properly and can produce a concise essay without breaking the time limit.  The credits for the essay for IAS mains will be awarded based on the effectiveness and proper expressions included in the essay. 

 

  • Qualifying Papers on English and Indian Languages

  • Essay- 100 Marks
  • Reading Comprehension- 60 marks
  • Precise Writing – 60 marks

UPSC Syllabus for Civil Services Exam Interview

 

Civil Services Exam Interview is also known as Personality Test. It is the last stage of the USPC Civil Service Examination. There is no particular syllabus for the IAS interview. The candidate can expect questions from wide-ranging issues. 

 

  • The candidates who qualify for the UPSC Mains examination will shortlisted for the ‘Personality Test or UPSC Interview’. These shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a board of interviewers appointed by the UPSC.
  • The IAS interview test aims to examine the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in civil services by a board of competent and unbiased observers.
  • The Civil Services Exam interview is more likely to be a purposive conversation intended to explore the mental qualities and analytical abilities of the candidates.
  • The maximum score for the UPSC interview will be 275 marks and the total for the written examination is 1750. So the total will be out of 2025 marks. The total marks candidates obtained from the interview will be added to the written examination marks, based on which the final merit list will be prepared. 

 

Candidates should note that there are no particular changes in UPSC Syllabus 2025 in comparison with UPSC Syllabus 2023 and UPSC Syllabus 2024.
